Bangladesh has achieved another significant diplomatic milestone in the international parliamentary arena, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad taking over as chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group.

The development came on Monday at the 153rd IPU Assembly held in Arusha of Tanzania. A Bangladeshi parliamentary delegation is now in Tanzania for joining the assembly of the international parliamentary forum.

Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat Secretary Md Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan confirmed the matter in an official press release.

Hafiz Uddin Ahmad formally took over as chairman of the IPU’s Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group from Bhutan’s Speaker Tempa Dorji.

The Asia-Pacific Group has 37 member countries, and Bangladesh’s assumption of its chairmanship places the country in a key coordinating role within the regional grouping of the IPU.

Bangladesh secures place on IPU Executive Committee

On the same day, Bangladeshi lawmaker Jahrat Adib Chowdhury was elected as a member of the Executive Committee in the internal election of the IPU’s Asia-Pacific Geopolitical Group, held in Arusha, Tanzania. She defeated the Mongolian candidate in the voting.

The election was attended by representatives of member countries of the Asia-Pacific Group. Jahrat Adib Chowdhury’s victory is expected to further enhance Bangladesh’s standing in the international parliamentary arena.

Reacting to her victory, Jahrat said, “I have been elected by the Asia-Pacific Group to represent it on the IPU Executive Committee. In the competitive election against the Mongolian candidate, I received 11 of the 19 votes cast. The matter will be placed before the Governing Council for formal approval on 9 October.”
