Police have detained Mohammad Suman, the manager of TupTup
Resort and Restaurant in Inani, Cox’s Bazar, in connection with the fire incident
at the site that has killed 10 people.
He was arrested around 3:30pm on Saturday afternoon, almost
four hours after the fire erupted.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Atikur Rahman
confirmed the matter, saying Suman was taken to the police station around
6:00pm.
A case is being prepared in connection with the “negligent
deaths” caused by the fire, he added.
The devastating fire broke out at the resort on Saturday morning. Ten bodies have so far been recovered, while six injured people are undergoing treatment.
The fire erupted around 7:15am on Saturday morning. The
firefighters reached the spot at 8am and brought the fire under control within
15 minutes, said Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Chattogram Division
Deputy Director Md Towfiqul Islam Bhuiyan.
The resort authorities did not keep necessary fire control measures
at the site including an extinguisher, hose pipe, alert system and planning in
place, he added.
Later, at a press briefing in Dhaka, FSCD Director General Brig
Gen Sultanul Afreen said the resort did not secure the necessary license from
the fire department.
In June, a fire department official inspected the site, and
upon noticing serious safety gaps had warned the authorities that it was too risky
to continue operations there. However, the warning was defied and operations
continued, Sultanul Afreen added.
Cox’s Bazar Development Authority Chairman Engineer Mohammad Jashim Uddin told reporters that the authorities of TupTup Resort also had not secured construction permission for the site.
