A court in Dhaka on Monday granted bail to Mizanur Rahman, son-in-law of Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Abdul Gafur, and Bikash Chandra Shah in a case filed over an alleged attack, vandalism, assault and looting at the New Gini Properties housing project in South Manikdi, near ECB Chattar in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the
order after a hearing, said prosecution division Sub-Inspector Shahajahan Ali.
Earlier in the day, defence lawyers sought bail during the
hearing, while the complainant’s side opposed the applications. After hearing
both parties, the court granted bail to the two accused.
In the same case, retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury was granted bail on 4 October, Shahinuzzaman on 18 October and Shah Alam Anik on 19 October. Three other accused — Mamun, Aslam and Munna — remain in jail.
According to the case documents, around 50 people allegedly
entered New Gini Properties Ltd’s project area in West Matikata on 26
September.
They allegedly opened fire, attacked people with machetes,
knives and sticks, and vandalised and looted the studio, taking cash, laptops,
cameras and other equipment. Several vehicles were also damaged.
The case alleges that the attack caused losses of Tk1.4
crore and the theft of goods worth Tk1.5 crore. Police said the attackers also
fired at officers, prompting them to fire five shotgun rounds. Project official
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan filed the case over the incident.
