Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin has said Bangladesh has been working with the international community to secure climate financing on the basis of equity and respect.
Highlighting the government’s various initiatives
and plans, Mahdi said, “Changes are being brought to end the existing energy
crisis and protect the environment. Solar power is being prioritised instead of
fossil fuel and its use is being made mandatory in government buildings.”
“Besides, electric vehicles are being encouraged
through policy support to reduce the carbon emission. Project to produce power
from wastes has also been taken,” Mahdi added.
Mahdi made the remarks at a seminar held jointly by
Dhaka University and Stockholm University at the capital’s Pan Pacific
Sonargaon hotel on Sunday morning.
Stating that joint initiatives by the international
community are needed to prevent global warming, Mahdi said, “Although Bangladesh’s
role in carbon emission is negligible, it is one of the nations facing the
risks of climate change the most. This is why the government is working to make
the ‘Loss and Damage Fund’ most effective and ensure enough climate financing.”
Urging the young generation to come forward to
protect the environment, Mahdi added that the young students need to work on
new environment-friendly ideas and innovative startups.
“The government will provide highest support to
effective initiatives and research by the students due to national interest and
environmental protection,” he further said.
State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate
Shaikh Faridul Islam, among others, were present at the seminar.
