Eleven platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in Gazipur to maintain law and order amid protests by garment workers demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000, although the situation showed some signs of improvement on Tuesday, the fifth day of demonstrations.

Although a few isolated incidents were reported at different points along the Dhaka-Tangail Highway from Tuesday morning, there were no reports of road blockades or major disturbances as of 10:00am.

Alongside BGB personnel, an adequate number of police officers were deployed under the leadership of 25 executive magistrates from Tuesday morning. BNP leaders and activists were also seen taking positions and conducting patrols on highways to prevent protesting workers from staging further demonstrations.

Mohammad Arif Hossain, assistant commissioner of the Media and Research Cell at the Gazipur Deputy Commissioner's Office, said BGB personnel were patrolling key zones to maintain normalcy.

He added that no reports of violence had been received so far.

As of 10:00am on Tuesday, no factory workers had been seen occupying any highways or regional roads in Gazipur. Groups of workers were instead seen entering various industrial establishments to join their workplaces.

Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Amzad Hossain said no major disturbances had occurred so far and workers were reporting to work at different factories.
