Border Security Force (BSF) personnel allegedly shot and detained a Bangladeshi youth near the Jibannagar border in Chuadanga on Friday evening before taking him to India for treatment, local sources said.

The injured youth was identified as Monirul Islam, son of Liaquat Ali of Hariharnagar village. BSF personnel took him across the border at around 7pm, but his current condition remains unknown.

According to local residents, BSF members opened fire, including rubber bullets, after spotting Monirul and several others near the border fence. Monirul sustained bullet injuries to his back, while his companions escaped by jumping into a nearby canal.

Local Union Parishad member Arzam Hossain said Monirul's family had informed him that the youth was receiving treatment in India.

Officer-in-Charge of Jibannagar Police Station Solaiman Sheikh confirmed that Monirul had been shot and detained by BSF personnel. However, he said police could not verify whether the youth was still alive.

In a statement, the 58 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion said its patrol team heard gunshots near Main Pillar 63/1-S, about 200 yards inside Indian territory, at around 7pm.

The patrol team rushed to the area and took necessary measures to ensure the safety of people living along the border, the statement said.

According to information collected from local sources, a BSF patrol team from Tungi Camp under the 32 BSF Battalion shot Monirul after he illegally crossed into India, BGB said.

Following the incident, BGB intensified patrols and surveillance along the border and maintained communication with BSF officials.

BGB also called for a flag meeting at the company commander level to discuss the incident.
