Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said the government will take all necessary legal steps to bring fugitive former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh under the existing extradition treaty with India.

He expressed optimism that the Indian government would hand her over to Bangladesh in accordance with the provisions of the bilateral treaty, adding that all necessary legal procedures for her return had already been completed.

The law minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop on judicial integrity on Sunday (8 November).

In his speech, Asaduzzaman said the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which introduced the caretaker government system, had given rise to a form of "intellectual corruption" in the country's political arena.

Emphasising transparency and accountability in the judiciary, he said the government was pursuing a policy of "zero tolerance" towards judges against whom specific and credible allegations had been raised.

At the event, the law minister reiterated the government's political commitment to ensuring genuine judicial independence and establishing a separate secretariat for the judiciary.

He also urged judges to maintain greater integrity, dedication and ethical standards in discharging their professional responsibilities.
