The Dhaka College unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho paid tribute to the language martyrs by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar of Dhaka College at the first hour of 21 February, marking Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day.

The Shaheed Minar premises resonated with the song “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulite Pari” as students and members honoured the martyrs.

Dhaka College Principal Prof AKM Ilias attended the programme. Bashundhara Shuvosangho Dhaka College unit President Mahmudul Hasan Shovon, General Secretary Md Emdadul Haque and other office-bearers and members joined the tribute alongside general students of the college.

Later, teachers of the college and leaders of various clubs, halls and organisations also placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar. After sunrise, participants hoisted the national flag and kept it at half-mast as a mark of respect.

On 21 February 1952, students defied Section 144 imposed by the then government of East Pakistan and brought out processions demanding Bangla as a state language. Police opened fire on the demonstrators, killing Salam, Rafiq, Barkat and Jabbar. People across the country observe the day each year by paying homage at the Shaheed Minar in memory of their sacrifice.
