A debate competition on whether artificial intelligence (AI) enhances or undermines students’ creativity was held in Kuakata of Patuakhali, with students presenting arguments for and against the use of the technology.
The event, organised by the Kuakata municipal unit Bashundhara Shuvosangho, was held on 11 August at the auditorium of Musulliyabad Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa. Students of Azimpur Secondary School took part in the competition.
Participants supporting the motion said AI, when used properly and responsibly, can help students acquire knowledge, search for information, conduct research, solve problems and develop new ideas.
It enables students to access information on various subjects within a short time, find learning materials and understand complex topics more easily, they said, adding that the proper use of technology can broaden students’ learning opportunities.
On the other hand, participants opposing the motion argued that excessive dependence on AI could weaken students’ independent thinking, imagination and problem-solving skills.
They said the habit of obtaining everything easily through technology could reduce students’ tendency to think independently and create something new.
Kuakata municipal unit Shuvosangho President Md Saidur Rahman presided over the programme. Md Hemayet Uddin, principal of Musulliyabad Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, was the chief guest, while Khalilur Rahman, vice-principal of the madrasa, was among the special guests.
Lecturer (ICT) Md Ershadul Islam, Assistant Teacher Md A Kader of Musulliyabad AK Secondary School and Assistant Teacher Mosammat Shirina Khatun served as judges.
Among others present were Kuakata municipal unit Shuvosangho General Secretary Md Zahidul Islam, Finance Secretary Md Al-Amin, and member Jaber.
The two participating teams secured an equal score of 68 points each, making the competition closely contested. Student Junayed was named the best speaker.
Speaking at the event, Kuakata municipal unit Shuvosangho President Saidur Rahman said the world was rapidly becoming technology-dependent and that it was essential for students to know about AI.
“However, we must ensure that the use of technology does not become a substitute for people’s own thinking and creativity,” he said, stressing the need to develop human values, reasoning, creative thinking and ethics alongside technological skills.
Chief guest Hemayet Uddin said debate competitions not only improve students’ speaking skills but also teach them to think deeply about an issue, analyse information, express their opinions through logical arguments and respect differing views.
He said such programmes play an important role in making students confident and responsible.
After the debate, fruit saplings and books were distributed among the participating students.
