A literary gathering was held in Joypurhat’s Khetlal upazila under the initiative of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, encouraging young people to dream and pursue their aspirations.

The event, themed “Dream, and Move Forward on the Path of Your Dreams,” was held on Friday at the Shaheed Minar premises of Pathanpara High School.

Friends and members of Bashundhara Shuvosangho took part in the gathering, where they discussed Brazilian author Paulo Coelho’s internationally acclaimed novel The Alchemist.

Speakers said The Alchemist is not merely a story about searching for treasure but a tale of dreams, self-discovery, courage and perseverance. The novel follows Santiago, a young shepherd who travels from Spain toward the Egyptian pyramids in search of a treasure he sees in a dream.

Despite facing obstacles, deception and hardships along the way, Santiago does not give up. Instead, each experience helps him understand life and himself better. Ultimately, he realises that having the courage to pursue one’s dreams and the experiences gained along the journey are among life’s greatest achievements.

M Russell Ahmed, president of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Khetlal unit, said the organisation’s goal goes beyond social activities.

“Encouraging young people to read books, practise literature, develop humanity and cultivate positive thinking is also one of our key objectives. The Alchemist teaches us to dream and move forward with courage and perseverance to fulfil those dreams,” he said.

He added that obstacles were inevitable in life, but success becomes possible when people refuse to surrender to difficulties.

“We hope the friends of Shuvosangho will hold on to their dreams and play a positive role in society,” he said.

Md Rabbiul Hasan Jinnah, a lecturer at Kalai Government Women’s College, said literature enriches people’s thinking and teaches them to look at life from new perspectives.

“The Alchemist inspires young people to dream, believe in themselves and move patiently towards their goals. Organising such literary gatherings is very important to encourage young people to develop a habit of reading,” he said.

Participants discussed various aspects of the novel, including its characters, philosophy, dreams and the relationship between aspirations and reality.

Among those present were Nazmul Hossain, general secretary of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Khetlal unit; Shihab Shamim, finance secretary; Arman Hossain, publicity secretary; Abdul Mannan, education and literature secretary; and general members Ashraful Islam, Shamim and Sujaul, along with other members of the organisation.
