A discussion was held at the head office of Bashundhara Shuvosangho in Dhaka on Tuesday to raise public awareness about dengue, identify and destroy breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes, and encourage people to keep their surroundings clean.

Bashundhara Group Adviser, Bashundhara Shuvosangho chief and renowned novelist Imdadul Haq Milan attended the programme as the chief guest. Bashundhara Shuvosangho Director Zakaria Zaman chaired the event.

In his speech, Milan said, “Preventing dengue is not the sole responsibility of city corporations, municipalities or the administration. Every family and citizen must take responsibility from their own end.

“People should regularly check whether water has accumulated anywhere around their homes. In particular, flowerpots, buckets, coconut shells, discarded bottles, tyres and other containers that can hold water should be kept clean.”

He further said, “Dengue often takes a serious turn due to a lack of awareness. A little carelessness can put a family at risk and also create a broader public health threat. Therefore, everyone should develop the habit of removing stagnant water from their homes and surroundings at least once a week.”

Zakaria Zaman said, “Various social and public awareness activities are being conducted with a commitment to stand by people. We are also involving the general public and spreading awareness messages to prevent dengue.

“A clean home and neighbourhood, along with an aware citizen can collectively play a vital role in preventing the spread of dengue,” he added.

At the event, people were urged not only to be aware of dengue but also to take responsibility for its prevention.
