Bashundhara Shuvosangho has celebrated International Girl Child Day at Dhaka University premises with a call to establish the rights of the girl child, prevent child marriage and ensure their education and safety.

An open discussion and awareness activity was organised on this occasion on Sunday, titled “The Future Bangladesh with Empowerment of the Girl Child.”

More than a hundred students from five DU halls participated in the programme, which was held at the Mall Chattar.

During the event, speakers emphasised girl child’s education, equal rights, self-confidence, leadership development and their role in building an anti-discriminatory society.

Speaking at the event, Shuvosangho’s DU unit President Abdul Momin said, “Ensuring girl child’s empowerment does not mean providing them with the opportunity for learning, rather it is ensuring their right to express opinions, taking decisions and building their future according to their dreams.”

“The families, the society and the state must work together to eradicate discrimination towards girl child, child marriage, dowry and neglect for their education,” he added.

Students who participated in the open discussion said empowerment of the girl child means giving them the freedom to take their own decisions and ensuring equal opportunities to develop their capabilities. Alongside quality education, medical care, nutrition, sports and creative activities, effective steps in preventing both offline and online harassment are also required.

The organisers pledged to turn girl child into confident and self-reliant individuals through establishing their rights, preventing child marriage and ensuring their education and safety.
