To curb road accidents and foster public consciousness regarding traffic discipline, the Kaliakair upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho staged an awareness poster exhibition and street assembly in Gazipur on Thursday.
The programme was held around 11:00am in the Mouchak area of
the upazila.
The initiative aimed to sensitise the public to abiding by
traffic laws, adhering to speed limits, and promoting responsible conduct among
motorists and pedestrians to maintain order on the highways.
Organisers noted that alongside strict legal enforcement,
individual awareness and civic accountability are indispensable to curbing road
casualties.
Careless driving, reckless speeding, disregard for traffic
signals, the use of mobile phones behind the wheel, and hazardous jaywalking
persistently trigger road crashes. Beyond claiming lives, these mishaps plunge
countless families into prolonged physical, emotional, and financial distress.
Speakers urged citizens to prioritise both personal safety and the protection
of others while using public roads.
Presiding over the event, Shuvosangho’s Kaliakair upazila unit President Niranjan Chandra Das remarked: "Road safety is not merely a demand; it is our shared right and civic obligation. A moment’s carelessness can subject an entire family to lifelong grief. Drivers must obey traffic rules and eschew overspeeding, while pedestrians must use designated crossing points."
He added that administrative measures alone cannot eliminate
accidents without mass public participation, calling upon people from all walks
of life to step forward.
The drive stressed mandatory helmet usage for motorcyclists,
fastening seatbelts, possessing valid vehicular documentation, using footpaths,
and avoiding abrupt road crossings. Local residents also appealed to
authorities to install speed breakers, erect clear traffic signage, and conduct
regular monitoring around schools, bazaars, and congested intersections to
avert fatal collisions.
