Students and local volunteers carried out an hour-long cleanliness campaign at Putiakhali Adarsha Secondary School in Betagi upazila of Barguna on Wednesday to foster hygienic practices and a healthy academic environment.
The initiative aimed at encouraging responsible waste
disposal, preserving campus cleanliness, and instilling sanitation habits among
learners.
During the drive, participating students swept classrooms,
verandas, playgrounds, and adjacent school grounds. They cleared scattered
paper, discarded polythene, and plastic bottles, shifting all waste to
designated disposal bins.
The participants also drained stagnant water from various
corners of the school compound to destroy potential mosquito breeding habitats
and reduce the risk of vector-borne illnesses.
Speakers at the event underscored that schools are not
merely centres for academic instruction, but foundational spaces for developing
responsible citizenship.
They noted that maintaining personal, institutional, and environmental hygiene is an ongoing civic duty that substantially lowers public health hazards, particularly during monsoon and post-monsoon periods.
Putiakhali Adarsha Secondary School unit of Bashundhara
Shuvosangho president Mehedi Hasan said engaging students in constructive
social service builds civic responsibility and encourages them to champion
hygiene practices within their families and communities.
Swapan Kumar Dhali, upazila correspondent of Kaler Kantho
and adviser of Shuvoangho’s Betagi unit, emphasised that sanitation must be
cultivated as a daily habit rather than a one-off programme, noting that early
student engagement fosters widespread community-level awareness.
The participating students pledged to keep their classrooms and
campus tidy while encouraging their peers to take part in regular sanitation
drives.
