What Is the Bangla QR Payment System?

Bangla QR brings banks, MFS providers and merchants under one unified digital payment platform.

Bangla QR Payment System is Bangladesh’s national interoperable QR-based payment platform introduced by Bangladesh Bank to bring banks, mobile financial service providers and payment service providers under one common digital payment network.

The system allows customers to make payments by scanning a single QR code at merchant points, whether they use a bank app, bKash, Nagad or any other participating financial service app.

Before the introduction of Bangla QR, different banks and MFS providers used separate QR codes for digital transactions. As a result, customers often had to use a specific provider’s app to complete payments at shops and business outlets.

Under the Bangla QR Payment System, merchants no longer need to display multiple QR codes. Instead, they can use one unified QR code that accepts payments from customers using different banks and MFS platforms.

Bangladesh Bank officials said the initiative will help expand digital payments across the country, reduce merchants’ dependency on multiple QR systems, lower operational costs and improve interoperability in the financial sector.

The platform was developed under the National Payment Switch Bangladesh as part of an effort to gradually replace separate bank and MFS QR codes with a unified national payment standard. The early rollout of the system began around 2020-2021.

On 1 April, Bangladesh Bank directed all banks and financial service providers to replace their own QR codes at merchant points with Bangla QR Payment System by 30 June. The central bank also warned that failure to comply with the instruction may lead to penalties of up to Tk30 lakh.
