A Dhaka court on Saturday sent Mahmudur Rahman Jony, former assistant professor of Public Health and Informatics at Jahangirnagar University, to jail in a case filed over murder during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Mohammad Saleh passed the order on Saturday after police produced the accused before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.
Jony was detained from Savar area in the capital at around 3am on Saturday.
According to the case documents, Joint Convener of Dhaka Metropolitan South Chhatra Dal Ariful Rahman Rasel joined the July movement on 5 August 2024 in the Savar area.
He was shot at noon on that day, allegedly by the accused, and doctors declared him dead after he was taken to a hospital.
Saydur Rahman, brother of the deceased, filed a murder case with the Savar Police Station, where assistant professor Jony is a suspected accused.
Jony, who also served as an assistant proctor of the university, was dismissed in February last year over allegations of sexually harassing a female student.
