Noted drama troupe Vivekananda Theatre will premiere its 25th production “Bhasane Ujan” at the Studio Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy tomorrow. Adapted from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story “The Gentle Spirit”, the play is written by Apurba Kumar Kundu and directed by Shuvashish Dutta Tanmoy. Theatre artiste Md Ershad Hasan performs the solo role.
Renowned theatre artiste and pioneer of solo acting in Bangladesh, Ferdousi Majumdar, will inaugurate the maiden show of the play.
In this play, Ershad Hasan delves into a new horizon of artistic exploration. His solo performance in “Bhasane Ujan” encapsulates the essence of his long creative journey and showcases his mastery in portraying layered emotional conflict.
The narrative follows Ashraf Bowari, once the leader of the theatre troupe “Bhasane Ujan,” who now earns his living as a pawnbroker in a tea garden. Among his clients is Sabrina, a young woman trapped in a suffocating life marked by poverty, pawned belongings, and the harassment of Jabbar Khandaker, a drug addict and womanizer. Seeking safety and dignity, Sabrina turns to Ashraf for help.
Despite many obstacles, Ashraf protects Sabrina, and their bond gradually gains social acceptance. They marry, offering Sabrina a glimpse of stability. However, haunted by past trauma and despair, Sabrina ultimately takes her own life. Ashraf, devastated, spends the night beside her lifeless body, grappling with profound questions about human goodness and the harsh truths of life.
The play concludes with this haunting, unresolved search for meaning and moral endurance.
