Bangladesh and Japan have emphasised strengthening bilateral economic ties and expanding cooperation through alternative financing mechanisms beyond foreign direct investment (FDI).
The emphasis came at a bilateral meeting between Bangladesh Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, along with Assistant Finance Minister Mimura Atsushi, at the Japanese finance minister’s office in Tokyo today.
The meeting reviewed the longstanding economic ties between the two countries and explored ways to deepen their partnership and elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level.
Discussions focused on Bangladesh’s infrastructure development, trade expansion and opportunities to enhance economic cooperation through alternative financing mechanisms beyond FDI.
Both sides agreed on the need for effective initiatives to strengthen existing economic ties, make the partnership more dynamic and explore cooperation in new sectors.
Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Special Assistant for Investment and Capital Market Tanvir Gani and Special Assistant for Employment in the Asia-Pacific region Shakirul Islam Khan attended the meeting, along with senior officials from both countries.
Japan is one of Bangladesh’s major development partners and has financed several large-scale infrastructure and social development projects in the country. Japanese-funded projects are continuing, while new agreements are also being pursued to support Bangladesh’s development.
