Md Mostaqur Rahman as the new governor of the Bangladesh Bank (BB).
The government has appointed Md Mostaqur Rahman as the new governor of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) for a four-year term, replacing Dr Ahsan H Mansur.
The Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the Ministry of Finance issued a gazette notification on Wednesday confirming the appointment.
Under the appointment regulations, Mostaqur will have to relinquish all his other professional and institutional affiliations before formally taking charge of the central bank. His four-year tenure will begin from the date he assumes office.
The appointment comes against the backdrop of internal unrest at the central bank.
Earlier on Wednesday, a section of Bangladesh Bank officials staged a protest demanding the resignation of outgoing governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur, alleging “autocratic behaviour.” The protest, organised under the banner of the Bangladesh Bank Officers’ Welfare Council, was held in front of the central bank headquarters in Dhaka.
The protesters threatened to begin a pen-down programme if their demands, including the withdrawal of show-cause notices and transfer orders issued to three officials, were not met.
Later, Mansur held a press conference, terming the protest a “conspiracy” by a vested quarter. He left the office shortly after the briefing.
Around 3pm, a group of BB officials mobbed and escorted Ahsan Ullah, adviser to Governor Mansur, forcing him out of the central bank premises. He was reportedly placed in a vehicle by some officials.
Following these developments, the government cancelled the appointment of Ahsan H Mansur which had originally been scheduled to conclude in August 2028 and named Mostaqur Rahman as the new governor.
Mansur was appointed in August 2024 after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in a mass uprising.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the replacement of Dr Ahsan H Mansur with Md Mostaqur Rahman as governor of Bangladesh Bank was part of broader changes under the new government.
“The new government has come to power. Many things will change. There has been a change here as well. This is nothing new. If necessary, there will be changes in many other places too,” he told journalists on Wednesday while leaving the Secretariat.
