A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered former Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to be sent to jail in a case filed with Lalbagh Police Station over an alleged attempted murder linked to the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana passed the order after police produced her before the court and requested a two-day remand.
During the hearing, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favour of a remand, while the defence counsel sought bail for Shirin Sharmin. After hearing both sides, the court ordered her to be sent to jail, rejecting both the remand and bail pleas.
While being taken to the court lock-up, Shirin Sharmin reportedly lost her balance and fell on the staircase, but on-duty police immediately assisted her.
A team of the Detective Branch (DB) arrested Shirin Sharmin, the country’s first female speaker who resigned on 2 September 2024, from her Dhanmondi residence at around 4:30am on Tuesday.
Following the hearing, Shirin Sharmin was taken to the lock-up under tight security. Pro–Awami League lawyers reportedly chanted slogans such as “Joy Bangla” and “Shirin Apa Bhoy Nai, Rajpoth Chari Nai”. Pro-BNP lawyers countered with their own slogans, prompting police to clear the area to restore order, according to Assistant Public Prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid.
