Retired major general arrested
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner and DB chief Shafiqul Islam said that Golam Mahiuddin Chowdhury was arrested from a house in Segunbagicha under Ramna police station at around 2:45pm.
According to the case documents, Golam Mahiuddin Chowdhury is the fourth accused in the case filed over vandalising New Gini Properties. Including him, police have arrested seven accused in the case.
On 26 September, around 50 people allegedly entered New Gini Properties Ltd’s project area in West Matikata.
They allegedly opened fire, attacked people with machetes, knives and sticks, vandalised and looted a studio, taking cash, laptops, cameras and other equipment, and damaging several vehicles.
According to the case document, the attack caused losses of Tk1.4 crore and the theft of goods worth Tk1.5 crore. Police said that the attackers also fired at officers, prompting police to fire five shotgun rounds. Project official Saiful Islam Bhuiyan filed the case over the incident.
A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed three accused on a three-day remand in a case filed over alleged vandalism and looting at the New Gini Properties housing project in South Manikdi under Cantonment Police Station in the capital.
The accused are Md Mamun, 32, Md Aslam, 24, and Munna, 29.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad passed the order after a hearing, said state counsel Shamsuddoha Sumon.
On 27 September, police arrested Mamun and Aslam from the spot, while Munna was arrested from the Cantonment police station area on the same day.
According to the remand petition, the accused admitted to their involvement in the incident along with the other fugitives. Preliminary evidence had been found to substantiate the allegations against the accused, and the investigation would be hampered if the accused were released on bail.
‘People to judge those who blame govt indiscriminately’
Responding to questions on the vandalism of Salman Muqtadir's studio, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said that the public would judge those who blamed the government indiscriminately and called the BNP extortionists "with ulterior motives".
He made the remarks to reporters at the Secretariat after a meeting on the security of puja mandaps and maintenance of law and order ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja.
Responding to criticism over the filing of the case, the minister said that police had to conduct a preliminary inquiry before recording a complaint. "Otherwise, you and I could also be made accused in a case," he said.
He said that the case was filed by a representative of the real estate company, not by Salman.
The minister also said that Salman himself had said there was no extortion and that no one had demanded money from him. "We strongly condemn such statements," he said.
He said that the incident was being investigated "impartially" and that everyone concerned, including New Gini Properties and owners of adjacent land, should be brought under the probe. "Swift legal action will be taken," he added.
A journalist said that 38 eminent citizens had expressed concern that land grabbing and extortion were taking place using political influence, causing deterioration of law and order, and that the government bore responsibility.
In reply, the minister said that the government was treating offenders as offenders irrespective of political identity.
The government is liable only when it fails to take action or police fail to act, he said.
