Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said the government remains committed to fighting corruption and revealed that the license of Ad-din hospital was revoked despite alleged attempts to influence the decision with large sums of money.
Speaking as the chief guest at a financial
assistance distribution programme for poor and underprivileged people at the
Manohardi Upazila Parishad Auditorium in Narsingdi on Saturday, the minister
said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had instructed all officials to remain above
corruption.
“Ad-din hospital spent crores of taka trying to
secure its position, but we still cancelled its license,” the minister said,
emphasising the government's anti-corruption stance.
He said the government has plans to make healthcare
services more accessible across the country. Criticising the previous
administration, he alleged that widespread corruption had led to the siphoning
of national wealth abroad.
“We are running a different kind of government.
People no longer have to pay bribes to receive government services,” he added.
The minister also outlined several healthcare
initiatives aimed at improving medical services for women and children. He said
a pilot healthcare scheme would be launched under which trained personnel would
visit households to provide primary healthcare services. Patients would be
referred to hospitals only when necessary.
In addition, he announced plans to establish two
specialised 3,000-bed hospitals with support from China, focusing particularly
on healthcare services for women and children.
Among those present at the event were Manohardi upazila
Assistant Commissioner (land) Sajib Mia, BNP Manohardi upazila unit Member
Secretary Aminur Rahman Sarkar Dolon, Officer-in-Charge of Manohardi Police
Station Jahangir Badsha, Municipal BNP Member Secretary Abdul Hannan, BNP Joint
Convener Mohammad Moniruzzaman, and party member Golam Mostafa, among others.
During the event, financial assistance was
distributed to more than 200 poor and disadvantaged residents from the municipality
and surrounding unions.
The minister later distributed tree saplings among
students and participated in a tree-planting programme at the upazila parishad
premises.
