The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday arrested two alleged members of a fraud syndicate, including its mastermind, for stealing a doctor’s credit card information and embezzling Tk3.41 lakh from his account in Jashore.
The arrestees are Shahinur Rahman Shahin, 50, a former supervisor of a mobile phone operator, and Sanjay Gupta, 31, a former brand promoter of the same operator. Both are residents of Kotwali upazila in Dinajpur.
A CID team from its Jashore District Unit arrested them during a raid in Dinajpur’s Kotwali area. According to the CID, the doctor used his credit card to purchase clothes from a showroom on Mujib Sarak in Jashore city on 21 December 2022. The transaction took around 15-20 minutes due to complications.
Ten days later, on 31 December, a fraudster called the doctor, identifying himself as an official of Eastern Bank PLC (EBL), and claimed that his credit card had been temporarily suspended. On the pretext of reactivating the card, the caller obtained its details.
The fraudsters subsequently transferred Tk3.41 lakh from the victim’s account through seven transactions to six mobile financial service (MFS) numbers. After realising the fraudulance, the doctor filed a case with Kotwali Police Station in Jashore on 21 March 2023.
During the investigation, CID officials identified other members of the syndicate through technology-based investigation, witness statements, evidence and information obtained from previously arrested suspects.  The two arrestees reportedly admitted their involvement during preliminary interrogation, the CID said.
