Eight get life terms in rape, murder cases in four districts

Separate courts in Faridpur, Narayanganj, Cumilla and Meherpur districts on Sunday sentenced eight persons to life term imprisonment in separate cases filed over murder and rape.
In Faridpur, two persons, Sumon Molla and Osman Bepari, were sentenced to life imprisonment in a gang-rape case, while another convict, Rasel Mondal, was awarded the same punishment in a separate rape case.
Judge Shamima Parvin of the Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdicts, said Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan.
According to court sources, the gang-rape case was filed in October 2024, and police submitted the charge sheet in February 2025. The rape case was filed in November 2023 over the rape of a girl in the Tambulkana area under Kotwali Police Station.
Besides, a Narayanganj court sentenced convict Mozammel Haque alias Babu to life imprisonment and fined him Tk10,000 for killing 60-year-old Abul Hossain.
According to the prosecution, Babu beat and hacked Abul Hossain to death on 12 May 2019, following a dispute over harvesting mangoes.
In Cumilla, Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-4 Judge Md Shamsul Alam sentenced three convicts to life imprisonment and fined them Tk20,000 each in a case filed over the killing of housewife Mariam Begum.
The convicts are the victim’s father-in-law Abdul Momin, mother-in-law Fatema Begum and brother-in-law Md Nizam. However, the victim’s husband and another accused, Abdul Motin, were acquitted of the charges.
Mariam, a housewife from Chupua village in Nangalkot, was strangled to death on 24 September 2005. Her father filed a case the following day, accusing the four.
Meherpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Ali Masud Sheikh also sentenced a man, Kolim Uddin Kalu, to life imprisonment and fined him Tk5 lakh in a rape case filed in 2023.
According to the case documents, the victim, who was disabled, was raped by the accused on 18 December 2023. Her mother filed a case on 21 December over the incident.
