Exemplary punishment to be ensured for Rangpur quadruple murder: Dulu

Relief and Disaster Management Minister Asadul Habib Dulu on Sunday said those responsible for the killing of Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family would be brought to justice and given exemplary punishment soon.
The minister made the remarks while visiting the scene of the quadruple murder on Sunday afternoon, while Rangpur Development Authority Chairman Shamsuzzaman Samu, District Council Administrator Saiful Islam and local BNP leaders were present.
“Drug use was the main reason behind the killing of four members of Ganapati Chakraborty’s family in Rangpur, and police will submit a charge sheet soon”, he
said after inspecting different rooms and the rooftop of the house.
Calling the killings “heartbreaking and tragic,” Dulu said the main accused had allegedly been involved in drug use and had frequently created disturbances for Ganapati Chakraborty, the head of the family.
He said police arrested two primary suspects, Siddharth Das and Mugdha Das, soon after the killings and that they had given confessional statements before a court. “There is no reason to doubt the involvement of the main accused anymore,” he said, adding that police would file the charge sheet after completing further investigation.
Dulu said the government had a zero-tolerance policy towards such crimes and promised exemplary punishment for those responsible. Referring to other recent murder cases, he said charge sheets had been submitted quickly and trials completed in some cases.
The minister also blamed drugs for much of the deterioration in law and order, saying Parliament had set the death penalty as the maximum punishment for drug-related offences. “Everyone must wake up and stand against drugs,” he said, urging people to build social movements in their neighbourhoods against drug traders, carriers and users and help bring them under the law.
Referring to previous murder cases, the minister said charge sheets were submitted quickly in the Ramisha murder case and its trial had already been completed. He also cited the murder of seven-year-old Nandini in Aditmari of Lalmonirhat, saying the trial in the case was completed within 15 days.
“After further investigation and submission of the charge sheet, we hope to ensure exemplary punishment for the accused in this heinous murder case within a short time,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Dulu attended a discussion organised by private institute EIT at the Shilpakala Academy Milanayatan as chief guest and distributed equipment among entrepreneurs.
