Bashundhara Shuvosangho formed a human chain in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in Panchagarh on Sunday to protest against river and environmental pollution in the northern district.
Held under the banner “No more environmental pollution, no more river pollution”, the event was addressed by Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s district unit President
Nasim Abdullah Noyon, Vice-President Suman Islam, General Secretary Naeem Hasan, and Organisational Secretary Abu Sayeed Sarkar.
Speakers pointed out that around 50 rivers in the district, including the Karatoa, Mahananda and Chawai, are facing an existential threat due to illegal occupation, stone extraction with dredgers, and the dumping of plastic and industrial waste. Farmers’ excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in cultivation is also threatening aquatic life and biodiversity.
They further highlighted that indiscriminate tree felling is destroying forests and disrupting the natural balance in the region.
Mahmudul Islam, a national environmental award winner from Panchagarh, stressed the need for strict government and policymaker action to protect rivers, forests, and natural resources.
