A Dhaka court on Saturday placed six activities-banned Awami League (AL) and its banned affiliate, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), leaders on a three-day remand in a case filed with the Gulshan police station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rakibul Hasan passed the order after police produced them before the court and pleaded to place them on a seven-day remand each, said defence lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi.
According to the prosecution, the accused are Md Nannu Mia, 38, SM Rezwan Habib Alif, 33, Md Mehedi Masud Chowdhury, 55, Md Aminur Rahman, 42, Sajal Ahmed, 29, and Md Ibrahim Hossain, 33, who are AL and BCL leaders at different levels in Jashore district.
The remand petition alleged that they had been engaged in secret planning and conspiracy for a long time to carry out sabotage and destructive activities. As part of that, the six, along with several others, were holding a secret meeting in Gulshan when police then arrested them, while the others reportedly escaped.
The petition added that remand is necessary to obtain information about the conspiracy, identify and arrest the absconding accomplices, and uncover the full facts of the case.
