Bangladesh has sought cooperation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to expedite the supply of electricity generated by the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to the national grid.
The request was made during a bilateral meeting between IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi and a Bangladesh delegation led by Science and Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna on Thursday.
During the meeting, the minister sought IAEA cooperation to facilitate the process of bringing electricity from Rooppur to the national grid. The discussions also covered the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, nuclear safety, international cooperation and strengthening Bangladesh’s capacity through human resource development.
The minister described the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant as a milestone for Bangladesh’s energy security. He said that fuel loading in Unit-1 marked significant progress toward carbon-free electricity generation and could help meet growing electricity demand while addressing climate change.
Bangladesh also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high international standards in nuclear safety, security and responsible management. The minister highlighted the country’s accession to the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.
The meeting was attended by Science and Technology Secretary Md Anowar Hossain, Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative in Vienna Tofique Hasan, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Dr M Moinul Islam and Joint Secretary Sheikh Mohammad Towhidul Islam.
