A Dhaka court on Monday placed two Biman Bangladesh Airlines employees, Manik Mia and Mizanur Rahman, on five-day remand in a case over the recovery of 80 gold bars hidden inside their shoes at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after police produced the accused in court seeking 10 days' remand.
In the remand plea, investigating officer and Airport Police Station Inspector Abul Qayum said the accused would be questioned to determine the source of the gold, whether anyone else was involved, and who was linked to the gold-smuggling network operating inside the airport.
According to the case documents, officials of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate took position at the airport on Sunday acting on a tip-off. They searched the two after noticing their suspicious movements on the runway following the arrival of an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai.
The 80 gold bars were found concealed in their shoes. Each bar weighed around 117g, with the total weight of the recovered gold standing at 9.34kg.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle Assistant Revenue Officer Ruhani Islam filed a case under the Special Powers Act with Airport Police Station following the incident.
