Petrobangla on Tuesday dismissed rumours of a nationwide four-day gas shutdown, saying supply would continue despite a temporary drop in pressure during maintenance at an LNG terminal.
The state-owned corporation said social media posts and photo cards claiming a four-day nationwide suspension of gas supply were intended to create panic among consumers, urging people not to be misled.
The clarification came after an announcement that operations at the Summit LNG terminal, one of the country's two floating LNG terminals in Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar, would be suspended from 8am to 4pm daily from Wednesday to Saturday for maintenance, triggering the speculation.
As a result, daily gas supply is expected to fall from 2,570 to around 2,250 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) during the period, while supply to the national grid may drop from 920 mmcfd to 600 mmcfd, Petrobangla said.
The corporation said the maintenance would cause lower gas pressure in some areas and apologised to consumers for the inconvenience.
Bangladesh's two floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) in Maheshkhali have a combined gas supply capacity of 1,050 mmcfd.
