The National Citizen Party has reached an electoral understanding with the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance, for the sake of a broader unity against hegemonism and aggression, NCP Convener Nahid Islam said on Sunday.
He made the announcement at an urgent press conference held at the party’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
This announcement comes hours after Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman disclosed that the NCP and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have joined the Jamaat-led eight-party electoral alliance.
With the inclusion, the alliance has expanded to 10 political parties.
Earlier, the NCP said that the party would contest the upcoming parliamentary election independently and field candidates in all 300 constituencies.
Later, it reached an electoral understanding with two other parties and the three parties decided to run in the election together.
At the press conference, Nahid said the martyrdom of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi has brought about a change in the country’s political landscape. “His martyrdom showed that hegemonic and aggressive forces are still active in the country.”
The NCP leader said, “In the overall changed context, we felt that a broader unity against hegemonic forces is necessary to ensure a fair and competitive election. Driven by this urgency, we have held talks with like-minded eight parties, including Jamaat, and reached an electoral understanding with them.”
Apart from the NCP, LDP, and Jamaat, other parties in the alliance include Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlis, Nezam-e-Islam Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, Bangladesh Development Party, and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (NDP).
