A leader of Jamaat-e-Islami has been detained by a mobile court for unlawfully entering a polling station in Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency.
The incident took place at around 10pm on Wednesday (11 February) at the Bhandari Girls’ High School polling centre in the town.
The detainee has been identified as Nasirul Islam, secretary of Ward No. 2 of Bogura municipal Jamaat, according to local sources.
Executive Magistrate of the district administration, Palash Chandra Sarkar, said they received information at around 10pm that 10 to 15 individuals had entered the Bhandari Girls’ High School polling centre without authorisation. Acting immediately, officials conducted a drive at the scene and detained Nasirul.
The detainee claimed that he had gone to the centre to submit a list of polling agents. However, the magistrate stated that there is no provision for submitting such lists at night.
Palash Chandra Sarkar further said that a preliminary bond had been taken from the detainee and he is being questioned. Further legal action will be taken against him after consultation with senior officials.
Meanwhile, tension spread in the area following the detention. Abdus Salam Tuhin, secretary of the youth wing of Bogura city Jamaat, alleged that their activists had gone to the presiding officer only to submit the list of polling agents.
He claimed that activists of the BNP gathered at the scene, created a mob-like situation, and handed their leader over to the police.
