The BNP leadership is giving priority to strengthening the party, and has decided to take preparations within months for holding the party’s next council at the earliest, said Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday night.

After the Eid-ul-Azha, a couple of more months will be needed to complete the council-related preparations, including fixing the date, he told reporters after emerging from a meeting of the party Standing Committee held at the Chairperson’s Gulshan Office in the capital.

BNP's last central council was held more than ten years ago on 19 March 2016.

During the meeting, the Standing Committee members also reviewed the activities of the BNP-led government in the first 47 days of its tenure, Fakhrul added.

Regarding the government initiatives, the members gave their positive opinions and also provided some suggestions to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who presided over the meeting as party chief, Fakhrul said.

The Standing Committee members also called for expanding the party’s political and organisational activities, and urged making the grassroots activists more active. To this end, they prioritised discussions on holding the party’s central council at the earliest, Fakhrul told reporters.

The BNP leadership also discussed the country’s ongoing fuel supply crisis, stressing that excessive fears among consumers is making the situation seem worse than it is. The fears are leading to panic buying, illegal hoarding and smuggling, the BNP secretary general added.

The party leaders called for increasing monitoring against hoarding and smuggling, and taking appropriate legal actions against the perpetrators, he noted.
