BNP grass roots for greater movement to free Khaleda

The grassroots leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP) have urged the party central command to wage a greater movement immediately for release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

They also drew attention of the central leaders to cut relation with its political ally Jamaat-e-Islami.

The grassroots leaders exchanged their views at different meetings with the central command of the party in Dhaka.

As part of their move to rejuvenate the party, the BNP central command has started meeting with the grassroots leaders from March 02.

The leaders of the city and district units of the party are holding meeting with the central leaders in phases in the capital.

 “BNP has a total of 82 organising districts. Of those, the leaders of 65 districts have held meeting so far. The meeting with the leaders of remaining district units will be completed soon,” BNP Senior

Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told the daily sun on Friday.

In the meeting the grassroots leaders have been asked to intensify their organisational activities, he said.

The party vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu said they are holding the meeting to form convening committees of different district, municipality and upazila units where the tenure of the existing committees has already expired.

Formation of full-fledged committees in those units has also been discussed in the meeting, he said.

The grassroots leaders have also been asked to remain united and accelerate the organisational activities before waging any movement, he said.

They want to wage movement for ensuring release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia, he also said.

They also put emphasis to wage movement centering different issues which are causing public sufferings, he added.

The top five or seven leaders of the district and city units attended the meeting and discussed the issues, a central leader of the party said.

On the other hand, different central leaders including standing committee member, vice-chairmen, joint secretary general and organizing secretaries remained present in the meeting, he said.

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who has been staying in London, sometimes joined the meeting through video conference, sources said.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, vice chairman Barkatullah Bulu, Iqbal Hassan Mahmud Tuku, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were also present in the meetings.

Talking to daily sun some leaders, who were present in the meetings, said most grassroots leaders raised their voice to cut relationship with the Jamaat.

They also proposed the central command to drop the ‘opportunists and timid leaders who are now avoiding the party activities, a joint secretary general of the party said requesting anonymity.

They also emphasized continuing political ties with the 20-party alliance and Jatiya Oikya Front, he also said.

Saiful Islam, president of Bogura District unit said central leaders including vice chairman Barkatullah Bulu and Organising Secretary Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu held meeting with Bogura district unit leaders on April 2 and discussed various issues.

 “In this meeting, we have told that the movement will not be easy without release of Khaleda Zia from jail,” he added.

BNP sources said the concerned central leaders are placing the proposals and views of the grassroots leaders to the party’s high command who will take decision.

 “BNP standing committee will discuss the proposals and views of the grassroots leaders in meeting of the party’s policymaking body. They will take decision about implementation of the proposals,” BNP joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossasin Alal said.

BNP insiders said the party central leaders will complete holding of the meetings with the grassroots leaders by April 15. Then they will also hold meeting with leaders of Dhaka north and Dhaka south city units BNP.
