Post-deprived leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to realise their demands, including cancellation of the newly-announced central committee.

The ultimatum came from a press conference held at Modhur Canteen on the Dhaka University campus on Tuesday.

They threatened to go on a hunger strike and tender mass resignation if their demands aren’t fulfilled within 48 hours.

The BCL men demanded stern action against those who attacked their fellows and fair investigation into the attacks.

A section of BCL men continued demonstrations on the campus for a second consecutive day on Tuesday, protesting induction of non-students into political activities.

The BCL faction started demonstrations shortly after announcement of a full-fledged BCL committee on Monday, as many dedicated leaders and activists have been deprived of posts in the new central committee.

Later, new BCL leaders along other activists attacked their agitating fellows.

Referring to the BCL factional clash, Awami League acting general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said there is nothing to be concerned over this.

The president and the general secretary of BCL will handle the situation through discussions with the agitating leaders, he said.

The AL also said that such a clash is nothing but a very silly matter.

Former BCL publicity secretary Saifuddin Babu, who didn’t get a berth in the new central body, read out a written statement at the press conference.

“We demand immediate cancellation of this committee and exemplary punishment for the attackers,’’ he said.

BCL general secretary Golam Rabbani said active leaders of BCL have been inducted into the new committee.

“At least 170 leaders of the outgoing committee were inducted into the committee. The deprived leaders will get posts after reformation of the committee,” he said.

At least 12 leaders and activists reportedly were injured in the BCL infighting at Madhur Canteen on Monday.

The injured are deputy secretary of BCL and sports secretary of DUCSU Tanvir Ahmed Shakil, also son of a freedom fighter and section commander of sector 11 in War of Liberation in 1971, deputy secretary of BCL and DUCSU member Tilottoma Sikder, president of Ruqayyah Hall and common room and cafeteria affairs secretary BM Lipi, general secretary of Ruqayyah Hall Sraboni Disha president of Shamsunnahar Hall, member of DUCSU Nipo Islam Tonne, general secretary of Shamsunnahar Hall Jiasmin Shanta and deputy secretary if BCL Susmoy Dey.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe body was formed to investigate the clash giving 48-hour time to submit report.

The deprived leaders include outgoing programme and planning secretary Rakib Hossain, president of Shahidullah Hall Sakib Hasan, president of Fazlul Huq Hall Shahriar Siddique Sishim, general secretary of Shahidullah Hall Arif Hossain Rifat, general secretary of Ekushay Hall Ahsan Pial, general secretary of Mohosin Hall Mehedy Hasan Sunny, School and scholarship affair secretary Jainal Ahmed, Tanbin Ahmed Saikat, general secretary of Shahed Khan, president of Kwait Maitree Hall Farida Parvin and general secretary Sraboni Shaila.
