A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced two people to life imprisonment for trafficking two infants after stealing them from Dhaka Medical College Hospital in 2006.
The convicts are Jharna Begum from Gazipur’s Board Bazar, and Manik from Narayanganj’s Fatullah. Jharna was tried in absentia.Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Judge Joyosree Samaddar handed down the verdict.
The convicts were also fined Tk 50,000 each. They will have to serve six more months in jail if they fail to pay the fine.
According to the prosecution, Monirul Islam, a resident of Sabujbagh area of the city, filed a case against four people, including the convicts, with Sabujbagh police in connection with the stealing of his newborn from DMCH in 2005.
On January 6 the following year, police arrested Jharna along with a baby boy aged between eight and 10 days from Khilgaon.
During interrogation, Jharna said the baby boy was not hers and that she had taken the child from one Manik in Narayanganj.
Police then raided Rampura and rescued another baby girl she had bought from DMCH guard Abdul Matin and staff Shila.On January 12, 2006, Abul Kabir, sub-inspector of Khilgaon Police Station filed a case against four people in this connection.
Later, Jharna secured bail in the case and went into hiding.
The tribunal on Tuesday acquitted Matin and Shila as allegations against them could not be proven.
