COX’S BAZAR: Three alleged human traffickers were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Teknaf upazila in the district early Tuesday.

The deceased identified as Korban Ali, 30, son of Abdur Shukkur, Abdul Kader, 25, son of Ali Hossain, and Abdur Rahman, 30, son of sultan Ahmed, were residents of different areas under the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das of Teknaf police station said on information, they conducted a drive to arrest the human traffickers in Moheshkhaliapara Noukaghat area under the upazila at around 3:00am.

Sensing presence of the law enforces, human traffickers opened fire on cops prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, he said.

At one stage of the gunfight, human traffickers fled the scene, leaving the trio in bullet-hit condition, the OC said.

They were rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared them dead, he said adding that three cops, including an assistant sub inspector (ASI), were also injured in the incident.

Three light guns (LGs), 15 rounds of bullet and 20 rounds of empty cartridge were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, the police officer said.

The bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
