8,848 Bangladeshis currently in foreign jails, says minister

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has informed that some 8,848 Bangladeshi citizens are presently in jails of foreign countries including neighbouring India, Malaysia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq.  

He disclosed the statistics while responding to lawmakers' queries at the parliament on Thursday afternoon.

The foreign minister informed the house that a total of 2112 Bangladeshis are now in Indian prisons which is highest number.

Besides, 1156 Bangladeshis are in UAE jails while 768 in Saudi Arabia, 693 in Bahrain, 572 in Malaysia, 442 in Oman and 316 in Kuwait prisons, Momen said.

The parliament session started this afternoon with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury in the chair.
