UPDF leader killed in Rangamati gunfight with Army

A leader of United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF-Main) was killed during a gunfight with the army at Baghaihat Ujubazar in Baghaichhari upazila on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Suman Chakma alias Lakir Baba, 40.

Md Shafiullah, acting chief of the district’s police, said UPDF members opened fire on an army patrol of Baghaihat Zone around 10:15 am, triggering a skirmish.

Suman’s body was recovered from the spot after the gunfight.

Meanwhile, the Inter Service Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) said an army patrol of Baghaihat Zone raided Dupata to arrest criminals acting on a tip-off. The criminals opened fire, leading to a skirmish that lasted for about five minutes.

Suman, described by ISPR as a top criminal belonging to UPDF (Main) faction, was killed during the gunfight. He was a prime accused in Naniarchar Upazila Chairman Shaktiman Chakma killing case.

ISPR said such drives will continue to maintain law and order.

On Aug 18, a soldier was killed when an army patrol was attacked at Poaitukhum, some 4 kms off Rajasthali Army Camp.
