New dengue cases declining

The number of new dengue cases has decreased across the country over the past few days.

Around 1,179 patients were hospitalised in the past 24 hours from 8:00 am on Friday to 8:00 am on Saturday, down from 1,446 on Friday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data.

Health experts see the drop in the number of new dengue cases a good sign.

Some 1597 patients were hospitalised on August 22; 1626 on August 21; 1572 on August 20, 1615 on August 19; 1,706 on August 18; 1460 on August 17; 1721 on August 16; 1933 on August 15 and 1882 on August 14, according to official figures.

The Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room of the DGHS said 62,217 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country this year since January. So far 47 deaths have been reported from dengue this year.

A total of 55,938 dengue patients have so far been discharged from hospitals, an official said, adding that 6,279 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country.

Official data suggest that around 43,756 patients have so far been admitted to hospitals with dengue infection in August.

The health directorate received dengue-related information from only 12 public hospitals and 29 out of around 350 private hospitals in the capital, health officials said.

Media reports say that around 65,000 people were hospitalised and over 120 of them died of dengue till August 24.

The official figures don’t include the dengue patients who are being treated at home or have taken treatment from doctors’ chambers and the outdoor departments of private hospitals, health experts have said.

They warned of a further spread of the mosquito-borne disease as Aedes mosquitoes may have been using the homes, schools and offices to breed in large numbers during the rainy season this month.

Meanwhile, a minor boy--- Mohammad Jarif--- of Shikarikanda area of Mymensingh died of dengue fever in Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) on Saturday morning.
