Japan typhoon death toll rises to 74, rescue operations continuing

Japan typhoon death toll climbed to 74 with around a dozen people missing, public broadcaster NHK told on Tuesday.

Rescuers in Japan worked around the clock Tuesday in an increasingly desperate search for survivors of a powerful weekend typhoon that caused widespread destruction, reports AFP.

Hagibis slammed into Japan on Saturday, unleashing fierce winds and unprecedented rain that triggered landslides and caused dozens of rivers to burst their banks.

The government’s tally was lower, but it said it was still updating information.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said there was no plan to slow rescue operations that involved around 110,000 police, coast guard, firefighters and military troops.
