Nazrul University observes National Mourning Day

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University observed National Mourning Day and 48th martyrdom anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with due respect and solemnity by holding several programmes on Tuesday.

Speaking as the chief guest, Nazrul University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Soumitra Sekhar said it was important to identify everyone involved in the assassination of Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15, 1975.

“All those who masterminded murder of the Father of the Nation should be identified,” Prof Soumitra told the audience present in Jayadhani Mancha.

'Bangabandhu led the nation toward liberation and Bangladesh would not have been born without him. Till now, he is our inspiration, he is our strength,' Prof Sekhar added.

Nazrul University Treasurer Prof Dr Ataur Rahman attended the discussion as a special guest and Registrar Dr Humayun Kabir gave welcome speech.

As part of the central programme, a candlelight vigil was held at Bangabandhu Square at one minute past midnight on August 15.

In the morning, the programme of the day started with holding of black badges in front of the administrative building.  Then, the black flag was hoisted along with the national anthem and the national flag was lowered to half-mast.

After that, a mourning procession started from in front of the administrative building and ended at the 'Bangabandhu Sculpture' of the university.

Nazrul University teachers, officers and employees led by the VC paid tributes to Bangabandhu by placing wreaths at Bangabandhu Sculpture. A docudrama named ‘Hasina: A Daughter’s Tale' also screened on the occasion.

Special prayers offered in both central mosque and central temple. Food distribution to the underprivileged, orphans, and distressed individuals took place at noon.

Talking to Daily Sun, Nazrul University Proctor Shanjay Kumar Mukherjee, said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will forever remain in the heart of every Bengali. Bangabandhu's ideals and political philosophy will continue to be a source of inspiration for present and future generations.
