Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday said he would stand united with the people against any conspiracy targeting the country and its interests.
“We will stand united against any conspiracy that goes against the interests of the country and its people,” he said in a message marking National Martyred Army Day, observed in memory of 74 people, including 57 army officers, killed in the 2009 Pilkhana massacre at the then BDR headquarters. He noted that the day had not been observed with due importance since 2009. However, following the country’s liberation from fascism in 2024, the government has begun observing it as “National Martyred Army Day”.
“On this solemn occasion, we pray for the forgiveness of the martyred soldiers and express our deepest sympathy and solidarity with their bereaved family members,” he said.
The prime minister said the trial over the Pilkhana massacre was ongoing and, as the matter is sub judice, refrained from detailed comments.
However, he said citizens must recognise that forces hostile to the country’s independence and sovereignty were behind the killings.
He also alleged that attempts were made to mislead the public through misinformation following the incident.
In a “fascism-free Bangladesh”, he said, the underlying causes of the massacre have become clearer to the people.
Describing the armed forces as a symbol of the nation’s honour, valour and pride, he called for renewed vigilance.
“Today, we must strengthen our resolve so that no one can conspire against the armed forces in the future,” he said.
