The charge sheet in connection with the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter is expected to be submitted by the police to court today following the completion of forensic DNA testing.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday announced that the maximum punishment for Ramisa’s killer will be ensured within the next one month.
Case investigator and Pallabi Police Station Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman confirmed on Saturday that DNA testing had been completed. The charge sheet will be placed before the court on Sunday, 24 May, provided the written forensic reports are officially received by the station before the end of the day.
Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman on Saturday also reiterated that although DNA reports usually take several weeks or months to process, the government is making every effort to obtain the test report within 72 hours.
Citing the matter as “one of the government’s highest priorities,” the minister said that the government hopes to secure the report before the upcoming Eid holidays begin on Monday and file a charge sheet so the trial could begin soon after the vacation ends.
Ramisa Akter, a second-grade student of Mirpur Popular Model School, was allegedly raped and killed on 19 May, by a tenant residing in a neighbouring flat in the capital’s Pallabi area.
‘Killer’s punishment within a month’
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said that Ramisa’s killer will be punished within the next one month.
He made the announcement while inaugurating a three-day national programme marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam in Trishal on Saturday.
He said, “The greatest damage that has taken place, especially during the time of the ousted fascist regime, is that humanity, compassion, and the country’s long-standing religious and social values have been destroyed. The death of an innocent girl at Mirpur in Dhaka has proved the complete moral degradation of human values.”
“On this issue, I want to clearly present before you today that the current government will in no way tolerate this kind of child abuse or violence against women. And the current government will, InshaAllah, ensure the maximum punishment for Ramisa’s killer within the next one month. That maximum punishment is the death penalty,” the premier added.
He said the maximum punishment will be given so that in the future no person dares to commit such abuse against children or women.
