Sergio Gor, the US President’s special envoy for South and Central Asia, has described discussions between Bangladesh and the United States as successful, stating that significant progress has been made.
“I was pleased to meet Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman during my first visit to Bangladesh and discuss working together to further strengthen US-Bangladesh bilateral relations. Significant positive progress has been made,” Ambassador Gor posted on X following a meeting at the State Guesthouse Padma in the capital on Thursday.
The two sides exchanged views on bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest.
According to a statement posted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its official Facebook page, the discussions encompassed trade and investment, energy cooperation, defence and security, migration, and the Rohingya crisis.
“The Foreign Minister warmly welcomed Ambassador Gor on his first visit to Bangladesh and reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to further strengthening the long-standing partnership with the United States, based on mutual respect, democratic values, shared interests, and close people-to-people ties,” the ministry stated.
Following official delegation-level talks after 6:00pm, Ambassador Gor held a nearly 20-minute private meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman. Ambassador Gor arrived in Dhaka earlier in the afternoon on a three-day visit focusing on bilateral ties, regional security, economic cooperation, and the Rohingya crisis. US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen welcomed him upon arrival, expressing confidence that the visit marks a key step in elevating bilateral relations.
