The holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi, marking the birth and death anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), will be observed across the country today with due religious solemnity.
Prophet Muhammad was born in Makkah on 12 Rabiul Awal in 570 AD, bringing divine blessings and a message of peace for mankind. He passed away on the same day in 632 AD.
The day is a national holiday.
The government has taken extensive programmes at the national level to mark the occasion.
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman have issued separate messages greeting Muslims in Bangladesh and across the world.
On Tuesday evening, the President inaugurated a fortnight-long programme titled “Siratunnabi (PBUH) Programme”, organised by the Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
Under the government’s national programme, the national flag will be hoisted at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, private establishments and Armed Forces installations today.
Special prayers will be offered at mosques across the country, including the Bangladesh Secretariat Mosque. Bangladesh missions abroad will also observe the day with due respect.
Relevant ministries and departments have been instructed to take special measures to maintain peace and law and order during the observance.
The Islamic Foundation has chalked out programmes from 25 August to 8 September, including Islamic sermons, seminars and discussions, as well as competitions in qirat, hamd-naat, recitation of self-composed poems and Arabic essay writing.
The foundation will also organise an Islamic cultural competition for school, college, university and madrasah students, a calligraphy exhibition and a month-long Islamic book fair. It will also publish Sirat souvenirs and supplementary materials.
The fair will be held in the east and south courtyards of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
According to the Islamic Foundation, renowned Islamic scholars will deliver sermons every day after Maghrib prayers until 10pm during the fortnight-long programme.
The programmes will highlight morality, humanity, tolerance and peace in individual, family and social life by following the ideals and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The Islamic Foundation and Bangladesh Betar will jointly organise a seminar in honour of the Prophet, while Bangladesh Betar will broadcast a poetry recital.
Divisional, district and upazila administrations, city corporations, municipalities and the Armed Forces will organise discussions and doa mahfils in their respective areas.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other electronic media have been requested to broadcast special programmes, while newspapers will publish supplements marking the occasion.
Bangladesh Shishu Academy will arrange special programmes for children, including hamd-naat, discussions and essay competitions.
Major city points, road islands and light posts will be decorated with national and colourful flags and banners bearing the Kalima Tayyiba.
Improved diets will be served at military and civil hospitals, prisons, government orphanages, child development centres and old-age homes.
