‘Good governance’ key focus in DC conference

The government has taken up a landmark decision to keep the issue of “good governance,” considered to be the most important factor in ensuring justice and a better life for the people without corruption as pledged by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as the focus in the annual conference of district chiefs or administrators starting next week.

Officials said the five-day conference, to be opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, aimed ensuring ‘good governance’ at all levels of the society.

The conference will be held at prime minister’s office complex, while different sessions will be held at cabinet division at secretariat till Thursday.

Western government and rights groups have been critical of the governments that ruled Bangladesh for not addressing the issue of “good governance.” The issue is likely to lead the country to justice and transparency which would end corruption from the root level as Sheikh Hasina has pledged a “zero tolerance” on graft after taking office this year for a record straight third time..

Meanwhile, the district administrators will meet President Abdul Hamid, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury during that time.

Cabinet division has already finalised the itinerary of the meeting in approval with Prime Minister Office where the proposals from deputy commissioners and divisional commissioners get priority.

Briefing the media on Thursday, Cabinet Division Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said 333 issues of local administration in 29 sessions would be placed at the conference.

Some 24 sessions will be held with officials of different ministry where Ministers, State Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Senior Secretaries and Secretaries are scheduled to present at those meeting.

Officials informed that the top tire of the government will focus on strengthening local administration in co-operation with district administrators to ensure good governance at every level of the society besides conveying development massages.

The conference is the most important one for the local administrators to share the mind of the government along with dos and don’ts.

After inauguration, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will participate in an open discussion among the top executives of district administration on Sunday.

On second day, the participants will attend six sessions with 19 ministries at cabinet division at Secretariat on Monday. Deputy commissioners will call on President Abdhul Hamid on evening of that that following a dinner.

On Tuesday, the deputy commissioners will call on Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain after attending 5 sessions with 12 ministries and divisions on that day.

At least eight scheduled sessions with 19 ministries are to take place between Sunday and Wednesday, while it would end would with meeting with Parliament Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on the next day.
