CHATTOGRAM: The Department of Environment (DoE) on Wednesday fined the ‘100MW Peaking Power Plant’ in Hathazari Tk 20 lakh for polluting the Halda River by discharging untreated wastes.

DoE Chattogram Region Director Moazzem Hossain also asked to keep the plant shut until setting up of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and making the oil-water separator functional.

The fine was imposed after a hearing on the issue held at the DoE office.

Plant Manager Shafi Uddin Ahmed and Executive Engineer Syed Md Erfanul Kibria appeared at the hearing, said the DoE Assistant Director (AD) Muktadir Hasan.

Mentionable, on information of polluting the river through discharging fired-oil, Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) Md Ruhul Amin visited the Morakhal area on July 8.

The plant was found to be discharging pollutant into Halda, the country’s lone natural fish spawning centre, through the adjoining Morakhal.

A team of the DoE also found evidence of river pollution by the power plant and issued a notice to the plant authority to appear for the hearing on Wednesday.

Mentionable, the plant was also fined Tk 10 lakh earlier on the same ground and the fine was exempted later in condition of setting up ETP following a directive from the ministry. Though the authority took approval of design of the ETP last year, the plant is yet to be set up, said sources.
