At least some 716 new dengue patients were hospitalised across the country in the last 24 hours till 8:00am on Monday.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday said around 60 people died of dengue infection across the country this year.

Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has received reports of 197 suspected deaths caused by dengue countrywide, but 60 deaths were confirmed after reviewing 101 cases, it said.

However, unofficial figures suggest a much higher death toll from dengue infection.  Over 80,000 people have been hospitalised, so far. Of them, around 175 died since January, this year.

The number of dengue cases is declining as the number of new patients stood at 716 at different hospitals across the country including the capital in last 24 hours till 8:00am on Monday.

According to sources at the Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control room of the DGHS, 300 patients were hospitalised in the capital while 416 others elsewhere across the country within a period from 8:00am on Sunday till 8:00am on Monday.

Health directorate sources said some 77,230 dengue patients were hospitalised countrywide since January, this year. A total of 73,942 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals after their recovery, it said.

As per official estimates, 96 percent dengue patients left hospitals after treatment though the number of fresh dengue cases declined in last two weeks.

According to a DGHS data, 761 dengue cases were recorded on Sunday, 607 on Saturday, 793 on Friday, 788 on Thursday, 820 on Wednesday, 783 on Tuesday, 865 on Monday, 902 on Sunday, 760 on Saturday and 1,025 on Friday. It was 1,189 on Thursday, 1,157 on Wednesday, and 1,299 on Tuesday.

This year, 43,686 patients were admitted to 41 private and public hospitals in the capital till Sunday. And some 33,588 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in the districts during the same period.

However, there is no record of patients who are being treated at private chambers. Almost all government and semi-government hospitals are providing outdoor treatment to dengue patients.

On Monday morning, the GHS data shows: Some 3,091 dengue patients are being treated in hospitals. Of them, 1,522 are undergoing treatment at 41 public and private hospitals in the capital.
