Four days after the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) lodged an official complaint, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally responded, expressing regret over comments made by BCB Director Asif Akbar that sparked widespread uproar within the football community.
The dispute originated on 9 November during a cricket conference, where Asif Akbar made critical remarks about the discipline of footballers and issues related to venue allocation. His comments quickly drew backlash, prompting BFF President Tabith Awal to send a written protest to BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul.
The BFF received the reply on Tuesday. In his letter, the BCB president wrote: “If the remarks in question have caused any hurt or confusion among members of the football community or its supporters, I sincerely express my regret.”
Despite the BCB’s conciliatory tone, tensions remain high. Asif Akbar has neither withdrawn his comments nor issued an apology. Instead, he defended his statements the following day, insisting they were justified—further inflaming anger among footballers and officials.
Former players, who publicly demanded an apology and retraction, continue to voice their frustration. The matter is expected to dominate discussions today at a scheduled meeting of the Sonali Otit Club, an organisation of former national footballers. Sources suggest the group may issue strong statements or take a firm stance against Asif Akbar following the meeting.
